St. Stephen’s is a small Episcopal Church located in the community of Schuylerville, New York. We are a close community consisting of about sixty-five families. Our core members are strong supporters of the church, enabling us to continue a mission of outreach and service to the community – the principle upon which our church was founded. We look to enjoy a viable future in an area that is growing rapidly and in a community that is moving toward becoming a quality place for people to live.
Schuylerville holds a prominent place in the early history of our nation. It is the site of the surrender of the British army under general Burgoyne following the battles of Saratoga. St. Stephen’s Church sits overlooking the grounds of the Philip Schuyler House at the southern approach to the village. The church is modeled after the finest type of English rural church.
The cornerstone for the church was laid on June 2, 1868, making it a little over 135 years old. The stained glass windows, installed between 1872 and 1892, are now in great need of restoration. It is well known that any work in stained glass will begin to show the effects of wear over time. Our windows show some of the classic signs of deterioration:
- Accumulation of dirt, dust, and other air-borne contaminants
- Loosening of lead around the glass
- Broken and/or missing lead
- Broken and/or cracked glass
- Deterioration of the glass paint
- Corrosion of the glass
- Bulges in the windows
- Poor condition of the ventilators
We are acutely aware that a restoration project such as this requires a great deal of planning and commitment on our part. We also realize the importance of caring for the artistic and spiritual treasure embodied in our stained glass by consulting reputable glass studios in order to make certain the windows receive proper care. Because we are a small community, such a project is estimated to exceed almost twice our entire annual budget. The total cost of the project will be between $60K-$100K.
This is where YOU can make a difference. Your support of our stained glass window restoration project will ensure the continued presence and significance of these artistic and historic treasures for generations to come.
